BlinkWall

Sharing your favourite media in your home. A high quality and cost effective display. A next gen digital frame. Blinkwall

A person working on a laptop at a wooden table in a bright room, with a cluster of five white-framed photo displays on the wall behind
Six white display tiles interlocked in a staggered cluster, showing photos, a weather widget and an evening clock, with a power cable trailing below
A hand holding a phone showing the Blinkwall app picking a social media post, below a wall cluster of six display tiles showing photos and a weather widget
Rendered view of the tiled display wall with one panel swung open, revealing the white rear housing with a connector block and white cables inside
Exploded render of a single display tile, with the white rear housing and connector on the left and the silver-framed front panel with two pegs on the right
Four white display tiles interlocked on a teal wall above a houseplant, showing a weather widget, a dog photo, colourful abstract art and a clock
Four Blinkwall app screens on a teal background, from the home screen to choosing a post and placing media on the wall, above the words blink share everywhere
Several green prototype circuit boards on a shiny silver surface, the nearest with a smaller board stacked above and a black board linked by a white ribbon cable
Angled render of a single white display tile with a dark glossy screen and a deep base edge divided into rectangular segments

The brief

Consumer electronics start-up Blinkwall asked us to design, prototype and cost a family of displays and companion app. The idea behind Blinkwall is to transition from mindless scrolling of media on your phone, to sharing your favourite media in your home. The system needed, a stand out feature, to be distinguishable from digital photo frames. It was our job to deliver high quality but cost effective displays, design for ease of installation and to meet competitive target production costs.

The bang

In the concept stage of design we devised a snap-together tessellating design that adopted a common display ratio. This enhances the perceived value of the product by maximising the user’s opportunity to adapt their composition of displays. During prototyping we worked with our electronics partners to cost effectively produce 6 working demonstration tiles, controlled by a smart phone app. This functional prototype utilised common and low cost existing electronics, which prevented the long timelines and costly development.

The result

A minimal approach to styling has opened up maximum market potential, whilst the modular tessellating design empowers the consumer to adapt the product for their individual needs and preferences. The app allows total control of the displays, with social media connectivity for photos and videos, widgets, reminders and its own social platform. A fully personalised, dynamic display for sharing your favourite media in your home.
