What is a Market Validated Prototype (MaVP)?
A Market Validated Prototype (MaVP) is the point in development where your idea has stopped being a hypothesis and has become a tested, marketable solution. It is a working, representative prototype that looks, feels and behaves like the intended product, has been costed with manufacturers, and has been tested with real users in realistic contexts.
MaVP is a stage and term developed by Bang Creations. It grew out of thirty years of turning ideas into products and noticing that the most important decisions happen between an early proof of concept and a fully engineered, production-ready design.
Where many teams rush from “rough prototype” straight to expensive tooling, MaVP is the deliberate step in between that reduces risk, surfaces learning and gives everyone involved a clear basis for investment decisions.
How MaVP differs from PoC, MVP and “final prototype”
Different teams use different language for prototypes. The labels can be confusing. What matters is what each stage actually proves.
- Proof of Concept (PoC)
Shows that a key idea or technology can work in principle. Often a rough test rig, lab mock up or early demo. Useful for answering “is this technically possible at all?” but rarely representative of the final product or user experience. - Market Validated Prototype (MaVP)
Works like and looks like the intended solution. Robust enough for testing with representative users and stakeholders in realistic situations, and detailed enough that costs, suppliers and operating models can be estimated with confidence. A term unique to Bang Creations. - Alpha / final validated prototype
Built in near-final materials and processes, using data ready to go to manufacture. Used to validate performance, safety and compliance before committing to full tooling and certification. Often the last step before production scale investment. - Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
The first production version released into the market, usually in limited volume, to test adoption, usage and business performance. In many sectors this is a small “beta” production run off real tools.
In practice, the step from PoC to MaVP is where the most valuable learning and innovation occurs. It is where you move from “this could work” to “this is what it will be like, and here is what the market thinks of it”.
How MaVP relates to Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs)
Many innovation programmes use Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) to describe maturity on a 1 to 9 scale. In those terms, a MaVP usually sits somewhere between TRL 4 and 6: more than a lab only rig, but not yet a fully engineered, production-ready system. It is robust enough to test with representative users in realistic contexts and detailed enough to inform cost and delivery planning. We created the MaVP stage from thirty years of taking products to market; it is our way of making that middle band of development explicit and focused, rather than letting it blur between “rough prototype” and “final design”.
How MaVP helps investors and boards
Bang Creations is often asked to reference Technology Readiness Levels and to work with teams at different TRL stages. We are happy to do that. Many early stage businesses are funded on the basis of hitting TRL milestones, and for large, technology heavy projects this can work well, especially where robotics, embedded electronics or complex software are involved.
In practice, though, most investors are not developers. Their primary questions are simple:
- Does the market like it?
- Would customers actually buy one?
- Can we sell enough, at the right margin, to justify the risk?
We have seen frustration when the lines between TRL 4, 5 and 6 blur and the deliverables at each level are not clearly distinguished. A project can tick the right TRL box and still leave investors unsure whether the opportunity is truly real.
MaVP is our answer to that gap. It is a structured way to reach the point where you can show investors and boards a prototype that looks, feels and behaves like the intended product, along with real feedback from the target market and realistic costings from manufacturers. It gives a clear, evidence based answer to the question “if we fund the next stage, what are we really backing?”.
If the market response at MaVP is strong, investors gain confidence and are happier to fund the larger, more capital intensive stages that follow. If the response is weak, it is far better to learn that at MaVP, when changes are still affordable, than after further investment in tooling, manufacture and TRL 5/6/7 activity.
Where MaVP sits in the development journey
At Bang, we see a full product journey in four broad phases:

Explore concepts, prototype, iterate and test until you reach a works like, looks like solution that the target market understands and values. This is the MaVP stage. - Engineer for manufacture
Take the MaVP through detailed engineering, design for manufacture and assembly, regulatory planning and pre-production validation, ready for tooling and deployment at scale. - Production and growth
Tooling, beta production, launch, quality control and continuous improvement. Ensuring the product performs reliably and can sustain and grow the business opportunity.
MaVP sits at the end of Phase 2 and the threshold of Phase 3. It is the decision point where you can confidently answer: is this worth funding through to full engineering and tooling, and if so, how should that be done?
What a MaVP must prove
Reaching MaVP is not just a design milestone. It is a structured checkpoint across four questions:
- Desirable: do the right people want it?
Representative users have seen and handled the prototype and can say, “If it worked like this and looked like this, I would want one.” - Feasible: can it be made?
Manufacturing partners have reviewed the design, confirmed feasible processes and helped estimate realistic production costs at different volumes. - Viable: can it sustain a business?
The likely unit cost, pricing, route to market and volume expectations have been modelled, so the economics are understood rather than guessed. - Responsible: what is its impact on people and planet?
Using the Design Compass, we have tested the concept against environmental and social questions as well as commercial ones, so hidden negative impacts are surfaced early.
When those four lenses line up around a specific prototype, you have a Market Validated Prototype.
Why MaVP matters commercially
Skipping MaVP usually shows up later as:
- Tooling committed on an unproven concept
- Cost surprises when first quotes arrive from factories
- Slow or disappointing sales after launch
- Difficult conversations with investors about “what went wrong”
By contrast, MaVP:
- De-risks major investment: tooling, regulatory testing and large engineering programmes are funded only once the market, cost and feasibility picture is clear.
- Strengthens funding stories: investors and boards can see, touch and test a credible prototype, backed by real user feedback and realistic cost estimates, not just slides.
- Shortens time to a stable product: fewer late stage redesigns, because manufacturing input and market feedback have already been integrated.
- Supports responsible innovation: environmental and social impacts are considered while changes are still affordable, not after the product is “finished”.
In other words, MaVP is a risk reduction tool and a value creation tool at the same time.

When MaVP is especially important
MaVP is valuable on almost any project, but it is particularly critical when:
- Tooling or setup costs are high (for example injection moulded products or complex assemblies)
- The product is part of a wider product-service system (hardware, software, operations)
- Multiple stakeholders must be aligned (for example B2B, healthcare or public sector projects)
- Sustainability and social impact are central to success
- Funding will be staged and requires clear evidence at each gate
In these situations, “rough prototype” or “lab only proof of concept” simply does not give enough evidence to justify the next level of spend.
