The short version
This site sets nothing for analytics or advertising unless you accept it. Google’s tag is not requested until you have made a choice and that choice was to accept. If you decline, or ignore the banner, the tag is never downloaded and none of the analytics or advertising cookies below are created.
Before you choose, the only thing that can be stored on your device is the spam check on our enquiry form, and only if you start filling the form in. Simply reading a page stores nothing. After you choose, one small record of your choice is kept so that we can honour it and stop asking.

Your choice is stored on your device
We keep no record of who accepted and who declined. The record is a cookie on your device, and like any cookie it is sent to our web host with each page you request; nothing there reads or keeps it. If you clear your browser storage, or use a different browser or device, we will not know what you chose and will ask again.
We keep your answer for twelve months, whether you accepted or declined, so that the people who said no are not asked more often than the people who said yes. If what we ask about changes before then, we ask again straight away.
How to change your mind
Use the Cookie preferences link in the footer of any page. You can change any category at any time, and withdrawing is as easy as accepting.
When you withdraw consent we tell Google to stop, then remove the cookies and storage that were set for that category.
Withdrawing stops any further collection. It does not delete the analytics records already collected while your consent was valid. Google deletes the records tied to your browser’s identifier after 14 months, and cannot take your visit back out of totals that carry no identifier. If you want the records that identify your browser gone sooner, ask us, though withdrawing removes that identifier from your browser and without it we may not be able to find them.
The categories
Necessary. The record of your choice, and the spam check on our enquiry form. Neither is covered by the banner. Treating the spam check as necessary is a judgement we have made, on the basis that a public enquiry form cannot be kept open without one; if you would rather not use it, our email address and telephone number are on the contact page.
Analytics. Which pages people read and how they arrived, so we can decide what to write next. Off unless you turn it on.
Advertising. Which adverts led to an enquiry, so we can stop paying for the ones that do not. Off unless you turn it on.
Our analytics account is linked to our Google Ads account, as is normal. What analytics records about your visit is therefore visible to us inside the advertising tool even if you have turned advertising off, and can be used to build audiences for advertising. Turning advertising off stops everything we set for advertising, including the local storage entry below, being put on your device, and removes it if it is already there.

The Google durations are the published maximums. These cookies are written by JavaScript, and Safari and browsers with similar protections cap such cookies at far less, so in practice they often expire much sooner.
Other things kept on your device, which are not cookies
The law covers information stored on or read from your device by any means, so these are listed for the same reason as the cookies above.
Advert click identifiers. When you arrive from a Google advert, the advert click carries an identifier in the page address. Because our tag does not load until you have accepted, we carry that identifier forward in the browser’s memory and in the address of the next page you open on this site, with a short timestamp so that a shared or bookmarked address expires. It is not written to a cookie or to storage, and our copy is gone when you close the tab. We treat it as part of the advertising purpose: if you decline advertising it is discarded and removed from the address bar.
Our marker in session storage. If you have accepted analytics or advertising and you use the Email us or Call us button on our contact page, we write a marker to session storage so that pressing the button twice is not counted as two enquiries. It records nothing about you.

Google’s entry in local storage. If you accept advertising, Google’s code writes an entry into local storage. We do not create it and cannot stop Google creating it while its tag runs, but it is there because of a choice you made here.

What the spam check leaves behind. Besides the _GRECAPTCHA cookie, reCAPTCHA writes one entry into local storage when it loads and three more when you tick its box. We do not create them, Google publishes no account of them, and we do not remove them: three sit under google.com, which no code on this site can reach, and the fourth belongs to the spam check, which is Necessary. Clearing your browser storage for this site and for google.com removes all four.
