2020 saw an explosion in the arts and crafts market with people sharing ideas and creations via social platforms and many turned those ideas into businesses. My daughter- age 16- up-cycles pallets into bespoke dog beds and sells them on etsy. Etsy saw growth of 119% in 2020, the online retailer- “Not on the High Street”, took a record earnings of £35m.

These platforms allow customers to buy products with confidence as the platforms put safeguards in place. It is a great testing bed for unique product with many established brands curating their own sales platforms such as Design Milk. This is a fantastic opportunity to reach target market segments. Anyone can stick something on Amazon, but curated sites attract target markets that can really help the start-up brand.

Obviously, many start-ups market through their own web sites. Great design from concept through to customer service is vital to gain traction and keep the momentum. We are really impressed with companies like Smol. Such a simple message designed and delivered perfectly. A laundry tablet at 50% price of the major brands delivered through your letter box. What really drew us in was the packaging and branding. The packaging is truly innovative and makes it near on impossible for a young child to open – yet it is made of cardboard. Genius

Let’s mix this thinking together: Home working, better connectivity, drive to be green, more online purchasing, more end customer value, more efficient logistics due to covid – and you have to have a good reason not to sell your products and services direct or via a curated platform and be different from the Amazon sales experience.
