BlinkWall:
The next generation of digital frame

The brief

Consumer electronics start-up Blinkwall asked us to design, prototype and cost a family of displays and companion app. The idea behind Blinkwall is to transition from mindless scrolling of media on your phone, to sharing your favourite media in your home. The system needed, a stand out feature, to be distinguishable from digital photo frames. It was our job to deliver high quality but cost effective displays, design for ease of installation and to meet competitive target production costs.

The bang

In the concept stage of design we devised a snap-together tessellating design that adopted a common display ratio. This enhances the perceived value of the product by maximising the user’s opportunity to adapt their composition of displays. During prototyping we worked with our electronics partners to cost effectively produce 6 working demonstration tiles, controlled by a smart phone app. This functional prototype utilised common and low cost existing electronics, which prevented the long timelines and costly development.

The result

A minimal approach to styling has opened up maximum market potential, whilst the modular tessellating design empowers the consumer to adapt the product for their individual needs and preferences. The app allows total control of the displays, with social media connectivity for photos and videos, widgets, reminders and its own social platform. A fully personalised, dynamic display for sharing your favourite media in your home.
