Developing the concept

We understand that products are invented for real people, and are there to make lives simpler and experiences more enjoyable, so the user must stay at the heart of an idea as it develops. During the development phase we build on your chosen concept, refining the details and exploring IP options and manufacturing costs. We can also provide you with branding and packaging options.

Detail 3D CAD

The chosen concept needs refining to show how it might work, look and feel. We consider elements such as materials, manufacturability, mechanisms and construction right from the start at concepts stage, but this is where they really start to come together. In this stage we will iron out all the details involved with turning an idea into reality. This often involves the creation of 3D CAD (computer aided design) models and more detailed prototypes. This phase of product development is always a bit of a roller coaster. During the concept stage we will have defined and set 'the goal', the concept we all believe will delight the user and be a commercial success. We must keep this foremost in our minds as engineering challenges, material properties, and most of all- cost, start to impact the design. At the end of this stage the concept is very defined and can be shared with prototype developers, and manufacturers to get an accurate pre production prototype and production cost estimate.

Cost

Our aim with each project we take on is to create something that is both innovative and marketable. It is important to consider commercial viability all the way through a project so that the concept does not stray from it’s end goal of reaching consumers. With this in mind, we try to get an approximate cost from our trusted network of manufacturers as soon as possible. During the concept stage we will often engage with our manufacturers to have their input, obviously this is done under strict confidentiality agreements. At the end of the detail stage, once we have technical drawings and/or CAD to send them a product profile report which details out every aspect of the proposed products, including elements such as packaging and shipping transit cartons.

Prototype

Being able to see, touch and functionally test a prototype before your product goes into production can really help you refine, demonstrate and sell the idea. During the development cycle we will make several prototypes at every stage. Prototypes range from very rough block models that show size and shape to accurate, fully representative models. Over the years we have made a wide variety of products from small hand held items which we can do in house with our own 3D printing, through to complex mechanics in large scale machines, which we lean on the expertise of our very diverse network of professional prototyping services. We can help you make the right choices and manage the entire process for you, working with our UK-based and international partners.

Branding and packaging

At the end of the 'Develop' stage we are often in a position where we know what the product will be when it rolls off the production line. In order to to move on to the next stages, work with manufacturers and obtain costs and time lines, we often work up the packaging design. The pack is often a structural design that will survive transit, but most importantly be a platform for branding. We work with our partners to create structural packaging and at the same time work on the branding and the pack design. Our branding and design partner has decades of experience creating brands for start ups and global brands. We can manage both the branding and packaging on your behalf.

Safety testing

With the works like looks like prototype, or prototype test rigs we are often able to ask one of the test houses for a review. It has often proven invaluable for an early stage review, prior to submitting pre-production prototypes, so as we can progress onto the engineering stage aware of safety concerns.
